SAGGAW

is a Tausug word which can mean "to reach" or "connect with" as in to reach a dream. But it could also mean "to catch", "to kidnap," or "to abduct".
Saggaw is a story about three friends who dream of promoting a more positive image of Sulu and its people, far from the media-contructed image of a dangerous, terrorist-laden island full of violence.

SYNOPSIS

With only an old camera at their disposal, three friends from a remote island in Jolo, Sulu travelled to Zamboanga City to join a Photo Contest and win a new camera for their photography club. While competing with more established photographers of different ethnicity, they discover how their chosen medium can become an instrument in promoting their Tausug heritage and ended up winning a more valuable prize instead.

CHARACTERS

MALIK – 12, 16yo; son of a Christian photojournalist based in Zamboanga. He has uncanny skills in landscape photography but his eye condition caused by a bombing incident that killed his mom hinders him from perfecting his photographer’s eye.

YUSUF – 10, 14yo; came from a middle-class, traditional Muslim family has an eye for portrait and street photography but his father is totally against exposing the Tausug people to the public eye, so as 90% of the people in their island.

AMINAH – 11, 15yo; a strong-willed woman who has promising skills in food, fashion, and macro photography, artistic with a taste, is from a rich Tausug clan who is arranged to be married at 14, denying her of a chance to pursue her dreams.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Our story is created to share the story of the Sulu Photograpeace and other visual artists based in Jolo. We wanted to let the people know about their dream and their struggle through our characters: the photographer, Malik, Aminah, and Yusuf. We also share their advocacy and we wanted to showcase the rich culture of the Tausug of Sulu through our visuals.

But most importantly, we wanted to make a statement about how irresponsible media coverage can damage a whole community’s identity, create fear, and stereotype. At the same time, we wanted to inspire other people and let them know that through digital media, incorporated with undying passion and the right advocacy, there are people who are trying to make a difference. In their case, through photography. In our case, through filmmaking.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

The story is loosely based on a true event that happened in one of the photo contest conducted by the Camera Club of Zamboanga. Three participants joined the contest with only one camera at their disposal and ended up winning two of the grand prizes. Turns out that they were the recipient of an old camera donated by a volunteer worker who conducted a Basic Photography workshop in their island way back in 2012.

Today, a camera club, Sulu Photograpeace Club, exist to promote Sulu in a positive light and counter its image of an Abu Sayyaf kidnapping-zone created by the news and media. However, most Tausug of Sulu still harbors that fear of being a target with a single photo of them taken, thus limiting the creative advocacy of the group to landscape photography.

  • Where will the funds go?

All funds will go into the production of the film. Since our film requires us to shoot at Jolo, Sulu, most of the funding were allocated for transportation of the entire crew from Manila to Jolo. The cost for technical equipment and logistics (location permits, food, vehicle rental etc.), talent and crew fees will also be taken from the raised funds.

  • How and When will I receive the rewards?

Thank You emails will be sent as soon as we receive the donation. Social Media Mentions will be released during production and post-production stage. Invitation to Private Screening will be sent as soon as the final output is completed and the venue is finalized. Photo Prints and Photobooks will be distributed during the Private Screening. The 1-day Packaged Drone Services will be valid anytime in 2019 but will be subject to the availability of the schedule of our drone operator. The recipient of the Production Team reward will be notified immediately of our schedule and is welcome to join us any time he/she is available.

  • Who are the proponents?

Ian and Amae met during a volunteer mission in Calinog, Iloilo organized by the Trail to Empower Kids, a non-government organization who helps students from far-flung IP communities, usually mountainous areas, by donating school supplies and responding to the other needs of their school. Both share the passion for promoting Philippine Cultural Heritage and Filmmaking. Amae graduated with a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and is currently finishing her degree in Media Studies (Film) while working as afreelance writer. Ian is a freelance videographer/drone pilot working on corporate AVP accounts while still finding time to volunteer and lead various organizations like the TREK advocacy group (Trails to Empower Kids), and a disaster response group called Team 48 Response (Tech Team Head), Pasig Multirotors Flyers Club, etc. Saggaw is their first major venture in documentary film production.
