Lagon Custom Guitars
A Reward Project
Iloilo City, Philippines has a hidden craft of making guitars from bamboo. The talented luthier, Agustin Lagon is the genius behind this craft, having made guitars since the 1980’s. His unique creations have reached the hands of musicians in New York, Germany and Australia. But sadly, economic times forced him to stop production for years.
It is in this mission that we, the founders of Padayon Musika Inc., aim to ensure the continuity of Agustin Lagon’s craft by marketing the signature bamboo guitars and investing in production capacity to for the longevity of this craft.
Lagon custom guitars from bamboo are known to be some of the best in the world. Bamboo has a unique characteristic that makes sound more pronounced and fuller than other wood. The expert fretting technique of agustin Lagon has also elicited praises from guitar enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. Even professors from Berklee College of Music attest to the quality of Lagon guitars!
1. Increase our production capacity for the signature bamboo guitars by establishing a workshop in Iloilo City
2. Invest in the training of apprentices who will be mentored by Agustin Lagon himself with his signature fretboard technique.
3. Build the Lagon guitar brand as we launch this locally and internationally to give pride to Philippine genius and innovation, especially in music.
Agustin Lagon’s story begins with an uncanny mix of a passion for music and for the sciences. In 1986, Agustin Lagon started making his own guitars – experimenting with different kinds of materials for the body, the fret-board, and even each individual fret. Over the years, his craft was perfected, and the product of the decades of science and precision is what you see today: a masterpiece.
Each piece is hand-made with great attention to detail and great emphasis on overall lifespan and sound precision. Made with mosaic of seasoned woods, Lagon guitars have higher tolerance to weather variations and vibration/expansion damage to increase longevity.Two-piece body with no internal cross-support ensures a fuller, more robust sound, and interior and exterior poly-urethane coating prevents moisture damage.
Agustin Lagon’s work is a constant reminder of the excellence and skill that Ilonggo artists embody. Beyond anything, Lagon Guitars are a heritage that Iloilo, Philippines can be proud of and should work at its best to preserve.
