What is Angkas?

Angkas verb: to give someone a lift.

Who We Are

Angkas Travelling Bookstore is a social enterprise whose mission is to promote the ingenuity of Filipino authors and publishers by bringing their works closer to communities across the country.

What We Aim To Do

We have made it our mission to shorten the gap between local publishers and consumers by bringing the books closer via travelling bookstore. We want to help create a culture of reading among FIlipino communities.

Where We Want To Do It

Angkas Travelling Bookstore will make its way to provinces across the Philippines. We will be staying for weeks at a time per location.

Our Activities

Angkas @ the park - book selling, poetry reading, and storytelling for kids
Angkas School Caravan - book selling, authors meet, storytelling for kids and training for teachers
Angkas Academy - various art related training workshops

Angkas Gives Back - buy books to donate

Why We Are Crowdfunding

Our travelling bookstore will not be complete without the physical bookstore. We are utilizing the help of crowdfunding so we would be able to purchase a second hand APV vehicle along with the customization for bookstore setup.

Our Why

An NBDB (National Book Development Board) study concluded that from 2007 to 2012 there was a continuous decline in readership among adults 18 years old and above. One of the widely known problems is the access to reading materials due to the lack of bookstores and libraries in areas outside of urban centers as well as some publishers’ inability to comply with bookstore or retail outlets’ requirements, most notably, on the trade commission agreement which results in the absence of a number of titles in bookstores to name a few.

Moreover, it was determined that the prime reason for declining book sales in the local industry was the lack of awareness of locally-published books.
